Word Art Wednesday – Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive dissonance is an interesting theory from psychology.  It explains how we change our minds or attitudes when we believe two competing things.

For more information, see the article I borrowed this cartoon from.

Cognitive dissonance?

It’s the foundation behind many of the photos we see on Facebook and other social media that try to contradict deeply held beliefs about people who have Down syndrome.   As a mother, I have no problem believing Trudy’s words that are printed on this photo.  Someone who doesn’t have the same experience as I do may feel “cognitive dissonance” when trying to reconcile their pre-conceived notions about Down syndrome and what parents want for their children and themselves.

Here’s hoping that more people adopt a different attitude toward intellectual and developmental disabilities in order to maintain their own piece of mind.

😀   Happy Wednesday!
